Furthermore, the formation of the German Progressive Party (Fortschrittspartei) by a group of liberal leftists (1861) and Bismarck's appointment as Chancellor (1862) further intensified the conflict between the Duma and the government. This conflict was calmed by the victory in the Austro-Prussian War, which demonstrated the results of military expansion, and the German Progressive Party split up, forming the Nationalliberale Partei, which was Bismarck's ruling party.
