An ancient Greek stringed instrument. Along with the lyre, it is known as the Greek harp, but its origins date back much further. Unlike the lyre, it has a box-shaped body and is sturdy, but large and heavy. It was played by holding it vertically or resting it on the lap. It had between three and twelve strings, the number increasing as time went on, and it was played with the fingers or a plectrum. As it can be tuned, it is said to be related to the sound system of ancient Greece. It was also characterized as Apollonian, in contrast to the Dionysian character of the aulos, a wind instrument.
