Born: March 12, 1881 in Helsinki Died April 19, 1966, Helsinki. Finnish politician. Entered parliament as a Social Democratic Party member in 1907. In the civil war of 1918, he opposed the party's alliance with the Soviet army, but after the defeat of the "Red Army" organized by far-left elements of the party, he worked hard to rebuild the party. He was Prime Minister from 1926 to 1927. During the Winter War of 1939 to 1940, he promoted a hard-line policy against the Soviet Union as foreign minister. He was active as a cabinet minister during World War II, and worked to strengthen the working class. He was imprisoned at the insistence of the Soviet Union, but was released in 1949 and returned to parliament as a leader of the Social Democratic Party.
