However, no matter how deep the connection between opera and the orchestra, it goes without saying that the flower of the art of opera is ultimately the excellent performance of a great singer. In the 17th and 18th centuries, an artificial voice called a castrato (male alto) was used to achieve excellent dramatic expression, and famous singers such as G. Farinelli (1769-1836) were born, who was a great sensation at the time, but the last famous opera to feature a castrato in the lead role was Mozart's Idomeneo (1781). In early opera, the main roles were limited to the castrato, soprano and tenor, but opera buffa, which developed in the 18th century, placed importance on the bass as the clown, and the aria forms and combinations of duets became even more diverse.

　しかし，オペラとオーケストラの結びつきがいかに深いとしても，オペラという芸術の〈花〉が，しょせん名歌手の名演にあることは，いうまでもない。すぐれた劇的表現のために，17～18世紀にはカストラートと呼ばれる人工的な声(男性アルト)が用いられ，一世を風靡したファリネリG.Farinelli(1769‐1836)のような名歌手が生まれたが，カストラートを主役に配した有名なオペラは，モーツァルトの《イドメネオ》(1781)が最後である。初期のオペラにおける主要な役は，このカストラートのほか，ソプラノとテノールに限られていたが，18世紀に発展したオペラ･ブッファは道化役のバスを重視し，アリアの形式も重唱の組合せも，いっそう豊富になった。…
