Large tortoiseshell butterfly

This butterfly belongs to the family Nymphalidae in the order Lepidoptera of the class Insecta. In Japan, it is found in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and was previously a common species, but in recent years it has become rare nationwide. It is not found in the Nansei Islands south of Yakushima and Tanegashima. Outside of Japan, it is found on the Korean Peninsula, from China to southeastern Europe. Its wingspan is about 70 mm. The upper part of the wings is orange-red with black spots, and its Japanese name, Hiodoshicho, comes from the color of the upper part. The underside of the wings is completely different from the upper part, and is black-brown and resembles a dead leaf. It emerges once a year, from late May to early June in warm areas and in July in cold areas. It is active for a while after emerging, but soon goes into hibernation and overwinter as an adult. The larvae feed on Chinese hackberry, Siberian hackberry, various willows (Salicaceae), and occasionally Japanese elm, autumn elm, and zelkova. Eggs are laid in masses on the new shoots of the food plants by the mother butterfly who wakes up from hibernation in the spring, and the larvae live in colonies, often baling the food trees completely.

昆虫綱鱗翅(りんし)目タテハチョウ科に属するチョウ。日本では北海道、本州、四国、九州に分布し、以前は普通種であったが、近年は全国的に少なくなった。屋久島(やくしま)および種子島(たねがしま)以南の南西諸島には分布しない。国外では朝鮮半島、中国からヨーロッパの南東部にかけて分布する。はねの開張は70ミリ内外。はねの表は橙赤(とうせき)色で黒色の斑点(はんてん)があり、和名のヒオドシチョウはこの表面の色彩からきている。はねの裏面は表面とまったく異なり黒褐色で枯れ葉状。年1回の発生、暖地では5月下旬から6月上旬に、寒冷地では7月に発生し、羽化後しばらくは活動するが、まもなく休眠に入り、そのまま成虫の状態で越冬する。幼虫の食草はニレ科のエノキ、エゾエノキおよび各種のヤナギ類（ヤナギ科）、ときにハルニレ、アキニレ、ケヤキにもつく。卵は、春に越冬より覚めた母チョウによって食草の新芽に卵塊として産み付けられ、幼虫は群生して、食樹を丸坊主にすることが多い。
