Wang Fú (English spelling)

Japanese: 王紱 - おうふつ（英語表記）Wáng Fú

1362‐1416
A Chinese literati painter in the early Ming Dynasty. His courtesy name was Meng Duan. His pen names were Youshisheng and Jiulongshanren. He was from Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. He joined the government at the age of 17, but was exiled to Datong, Shanxi Province in about 1399 (Jianwen 1). He was later pardoned and returned home, retiring to Jiulongshan for a time, but in 1412 (Yongle 10) he entered the Hanlin Academy with his calligraphy skills and became a member of the Zhongshu Shere. He excelled in ink and bamboo painting, and in landscape painting he learned much about landscape painting from the Four Great Masters of the late Yuan Dynasty, especially Ni Zan and Wang Meng. After the collapse of the Suzhou painting world in the late Yuan and early Ming Dynasties, he is noted as one of the few literati painters who continued the style of the Four Great Masters of the late Yuan Dynasty.

中国，明初の文人画家。字は孟端。号は友石生，九竜山人。江蘇省無錫の人。17歳で仕官したが，1399年(建文1)ころ山西省大同に流謫された。のち許されて帰郷し一時九竜山に隠棲したが，1412年(永楽10)に能書をもって翰林院に入り中書舎人となった。墨竹，山水画にすぐれたが，山水画は元末四大家，なかんずく倪瓚（げいさん），王蒙に学んだものが多い。元末･明初の蘇州画壇崩壊以後，元末四大家の様式を伝えた数少ない文人画家として注目される。
