[Died] September 12, 2003. American singer-songwriter from Nashville, Tennessee. Real name JR Cash. A legendary country and western singer, his genre-free music also influenced folk and rock music. His deep baritone, clear lyrics, and sincere and warm attitude towards the weak captured people's hearts and made him an idol. Born the son of a poor farmer. In 1956, he had a hit with "I Walk the Line," and in 1963, he topped the charts with "Ring of Fire," written by his second wife, June Carter. He wore black clothes and was nicknamed the "Man in Black." In the 1960s and 1970s, he hosted a TV show with Bob Dylan, and his records achieved sales comparable to those of the Beatles. He won 13 Grammy Awards, was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1980, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, and received the Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996. In 2005, a film about Cash's life, Walk the Line, was released.

Cash。伝説的カントリー・アンド・ウェスタン歌手ながらジャンルにとらわれない音楽はフォーク，ロック音楽にも影響を及ぼし，重厚なバリトン，明快な歌詞，誠実で弱者に温かい姿勢が人々の心をつかみ偶像的存在となる。貧しい農家の息子として生まれた。1956年『アイ・ウォーク・ザ・ライン』がヒット，1963年に 2番目の妻ジューン・カーターの手になる『リング・オブ・ファイア』でヒットチャートのトップに立つ。黒服をまとい「マン・イン・ブラック」の愛称をもつ。1960～70年代にはボブ・ディランとともにテレビ番組のホストを務め，レコードもビートルズに匹敵する売り上げを達成した。グラミー賞を 13回受賞，1980年カントリーの殿堂，1992年ロックの殿堂入りを果たし，1996年ケネディ・センター功労賞を受賞した。2005年，キャッシュの半生を描いた映画『ウォーク・ザ・ライン／君につづく道』が公開された。
