Gulf of Alaska - Alaskawan (English spelling)

Gulf of Alaska - Alaskawan (English spelling)
A bay formed by the wide intrusion of the Pacific Ocean into the southern coast of Alaska. Its area is 1,533,000 km2 . J. Cook was the first to explore this area in the late 18th century. It is sandwiched between the Alaska Peninsula to the west and the Alexander Islands to the east, and the coast is a fjord with many inlets and outlets. The warm Alaska Current flows through the bay, so it never freezes over, even though it is at a high latitude. The continental glaciers reach just above the tree line, and ice blocks that move into the sea become icebergs. The westerly winds bring a lot of rain to the coastal slopes, which leads to well-developed forests and a thriving forestry industry. The main ports are Anchorage, Seward, and Valdez. The area is also rich in marine resources, and the catch is large. Oil has also been discovered along Cook Inlet and at the bottom of Controller Bay.
