...It is a drug used as an insecticide and fish poison, and is made from the roots and underground stems of Derris plants of the legume family. The insecticidal properties of the Derris genus, the source plant, were known in Europe in the mid-19th century, and it has long been an important fish poison plant used in the poison fishing method in Malaysia and the Pacific Islands. Toba, Tachitoba, and Haitoba contain large amounts of rotenone, the insecticidal active ingredient of Derris, and are also cultivated. Toba D. elliptica Benth. (illustration) is a woody vine similar to wisteria, with odd-pinnate compound leaves with 4 to 6 pairs of leaflets. ...
