The transport of cargo by combining two or more different means of transport under the responsibility of a single carrier. Transport means include ships, railroads, trucks, and airplanes, and the method is selected by taking advantage of the transport characteristics of each. In general, the balance between transport time and transport costs is taken into consideration. For example, when transporting cargo from Japan to Europe, rather than transporting directly by airplane or ship, it is possible to transport the cargo by ship across the Pacific Ocean and then transfer it to an airplane in North America for transport, or to cross the Pacific Ocean by ship and the American continent by rail, and then transport the cargo by ship again across the Atlantic Ocean. As Japan is an island nation, transport to other countries requires some form of intermodal transport.
