[Patterns as decoration]
The objects that are decorated with patterns range widely from the human body to clothing, utensils, furniture, other crafts, and buildings, but the purpose is, first of all, hedonistic and ornamental decorative patterns for the sole purpose of "decorating." In the West, the words "decoration" and "ornament," which are of Latin origin, are used to describe things that are unnecessary or luxurious in human life. However, this originally stems from the innate instinct for decoration that humans have had, and since prehistoric times, humans have decorated everything in an attempt to beautify their living environment and find joy in life.

 文様を飾る対象は,人体をはじめ,衣服,器物,家具,その他の工芸品や建築物などにひろくわたるが,その目的としては,第1には,純粋に〈飾る〉ということだけのための快楽的,観賞的な装飾文様がある。物を〈飾る〉とか〈装う〉とかいう言葉は,西洋ではラテン語起源の〈デコレーションdecoration〉あるいは〈オーナメントornament〉などがあるが,それらは人間の生活にとってよけいなものとか,ぜいたくなものと考えられたこともあった。しかし,それは本来,人間のもって生まれた装飾本能に由来するもので,先史時代以来,人類はみずからの生活環境を美化し,人生の喜びを見いだそうとして,あらゆるものに装飾をほどこしてきた。…
