Chakhar (English spelling)

Japanese: チャハル - ちゃはる（英語表記）Chakhar

It was a direct-controlled region of Mongolia during the Ming Dynasty in China, and was also called Zhahan. During the Jiajing period (1522-66), under pressure from the Tumet tribe, they moved to the outskirts of Liaodong, where they lived a nomadic life, and came to be called Chahar, which means outskirts in Mongolian. They went down to the Qing Dynasty and were temporarily stationed near Yixian, Liaoning Province (north of Jinzhou), but were later placed outside the borders of Datong and Xuanhua (outside the Great Wall), where they were organized into 8 banners. It is now part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. [Kono Michihiro]

中国，明代のモンゴルの直轄部で，挿漢とも呼んだ。嘉靖年間(1522‐66)トゥメット部の圧迫を受けて遼東の辺外の地に移り，遊牧生活を送っていたので，モンゴル語で辺域を意味するチャハルと呼ばれるようになったという。清に下り，一時遼寧省義県(錦州北方)付近に配置されたが，のち大同，宣化の辺外(長城線外)に配置され8旗に編成された。現在は内モンゴル自治区の一部となっている。【河野通博】
