The theory that matter has life within itself and moves. The original word hylozoism is a compound word of the Greek words hlē, meaning matter, and zōē, meaning life, and means the doctrine of vitalism of matter. Early philosophers who lived before the active principle (cause) of mind or soul was distinguished from the passive principle (material cause) of matter are called vitalists. For example, Thales said that magnets attract iron because it has a soul, and that "all things are full of gods."
