Asuka Art

Japanese: 飛鳥美術 - あすかびじゅつ

There are differing theories regarding the division of the period of Asuka art, but all agree that the upper limit is the time of the introduction of Buddhism. The majority of theories place the lower limit at 644 (Kōgyoku 3) or 645 (Taika 1), but there are also theories that argue that the division of art history should be based on stylistic changes in artworks, rather than on political or social changes, and that the cutoff point is 671 (Tenchi 10), the year before the Jinshin Rebellion (Kobayashi Tsuyoshi), 670 (Machida Koichi), and more recently, 663 (Nishikawa Shinji) at the Battle of Hakusukinoe, and most of these are proposed by those in the field of sculpture history.

飛鳥美術の時代区分については学説が分かれているが，その上限は等しく仏教伝来の時点とする。下限は644年(皇極3)または645年(大化1)とする説が大勢を占めていたが，美術史の時代区分は政治的･社会的変革によるのではなく，美術作品の様式的な変化にもとづくべきであるとして，671年(天智10)壬申の乱前年(小林剛)，670年法隆寺焼亡(町田甲一)，最近では663年白村江の戦(西川新次)等をくぎりとする説がみられ，その多くが彫刻史の側から提唱されている。
