Koiwai Farm - Koiwai Farm

This farm is located in the mid-west of Iwate Prefecture, straddling Shizukuishi Town, Iwate County, and Takizawa City. Spreading across the southern foot of Mt. Iwate, it covers an area of 2,600 hectares and is the largest private farm in Japan. It was founded in 1891 (Meiji 24) as a large farm-style ranch by Ono Yoshimasa of the Japanese Railway Company, Iwasaki Yataro of the Mitsubishi zaibatsu, and Inoue Masaru, Director General of the Railway Bureau, and was named Koiwai after the initials of the three men. Until 1950 (Showa 25), the farm was known as a breeding center for racehorses, but since then, the focus has been on raising dairy cows, beef cattle, sheep, turkeys, and other animals, and is particularly known for producing Holstein breeding cattle and hatching eggs for the excellent Scheber breed of eggs. Set against the backdrop of an idyllic landscape, Koiwai Farm Makibaen has a variety of facilities, including flower beds, a rest house, and a Genghis Khan restaurant, and is a popular tourist destination on the outskirts of Morioka city.
