…Studies on succession in the United States progressed from the end of the 19th century through the 20th century. People such as H.C. Cowles and his student W.S. Cooper clarified that the process and speed of succession differ depending on the conditions at the start of succession, such as on rocks, on sand dunes, or in marshes, and that as succession progresses, the communities converge to the same community, and that there exists a community in the final stage of succession, called a climax. It was F.E. Clements who compiled the research on succession in the United States at that time. …
