…The origin of the word is said to be either the goddess Ashtoreth-Astarte, or the ancient Egyptian tarut (meaning "the one who is questioned, I long for an answer"), derived from the ancient Persian tarisk, which is linked to the theory of its origin (A.Court de Géblin) that it was created as a divining device to predict the rise and fall of the waters of the Nile. There is also a theory of Hebrew origin (E. Levi) because the 22 cards of the Tarot's Major Arcana correspond to the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet, and there is also a theory of Indian origin because the design of the Minor Arcana is reminiscent of the ancient Indian chess game Chatur-anga.
