〘Noun〙① A cloth garment worn under attire. It is smaller and shorter than a hitoe . Originally it was only worn in summer to absorb sweat, but later on it was dyed white in spring and winter, red in summer and autumn, and by the elderly it was dyed in perfume. It may also be worn with the collar of a hitoe or under-sleeve garment , with only the sleeves of a hitoe draped over it. (Sanjoke Shozoku-sho (possibly around 1200)) ② Made by samurai families from heavily starched white cloth, worn as an undergarment under a hitatare robe . 〘名〙① 装束の下に着る布製の衣。単衣(ひとえ)より小さく短い。もと汗取りとして夏だけ用いたが、後世は春冬は白、夏秋は紅、老人は香染を用いた。また、単衣・下襲の襟(えり)をつけ、袖に単衣の袖だけつけて用いることがある。〔三条家装束抄(1200頃か)〕② 武家で糊をこわくつけた白布で仕立て、単衣の直垂(ひたたれ)の下に重ねて着たもの。〔御評定着座次第(1403‐08頃か)〕
