A relatively flat landform with few irregularities on the surface. They are broadly divided into sedimentary plains and erosional plains based on the cause of their formation. Sedimentary plains are formed mainly by river deposition, and include alluvial fans, deltas, natural levees, and back marshes. Seabeds that are formed by marine depositional surfaces are called coastal plains. Sedimentary plains often develop in new mountain-building regions, such as Japan. Erosional plains are areas where undulating mountains have been worn down and flattened by the erosive action of running water, glaciers, wind, etc., and are widely distributed in old continental massifs and old orogenic belts with stable ground.
