Born: February 9, 1830 in Istanbul [Died] June 4, 1876. Istanbul The 32nd Sultan of the Ottoman Empire (reigned 1861-76). He succeeded his brother, Sultan Abdul Mecid I, and continued the political system of the Tanzimat era. However, he gradually showed a tendency towards autocracy, and was forced to abdicate amid criticism from anti-autocratic and liberal movement advocates such as Namuk Kemal, and then died suddenly.
