…Mountains are usually grouped together and occupy a wide area, forming what are called mountain ranges, but when the main mountain ridges form a long, continuous line, they are called mountain ranges. When multiple parallel mountain ranges overlap, they are called mountain systems or cordilleras. In fact, when proper nouns are used to refer to them, the terms mountain range, mountain system, and mountain range are often used interchangeably.
