...Strikes against employers were often launched, sometimes leading to riots. The guilds not only provided occupational security, but also usually took the form of religious associations called fraternities, which guaranteed funerals for fellow craftsmen and held festivals for the patron saints of each trade. Under the Ancien Régime, both the royal authority and the secular and religious authorities of the Church tried many times to disband these secret associations of craftsmen, but all without success.
