(1) A dynasty in southern Karnataka, India. It arose towards the end of the 4th century and had its capital at Tarakad on the banks of the Cabeli River near Mysore. It maintained its territory while always being subordinate to the powerful nations of the Deccan and Tamil Nadu, and survived for over 600 years. However, it was destroyed by the Chola dynasty in the 11th century. (2) A dynasty in Orissa, India. It arose towards the end of the 5th century and had its capital at Kalinganagar, ruling the coastal area of Orissa. Its most prosperous period was under Anantavarman (reigned 1078-1142), but it declined under attacks by Muslim armies and was destroyed by Kapilesvara of the Gajapati dynasty around 1430.
