According to the Bungo no Kuni Fudoki and other sources, it has been a landmark for Setouchi transportation since ancient times, and in the Suininki there is a story about a beautiful woman from Ohokara Province becoming the deity Himekoso in Kunisaki. Under the Ritsuryo system, Bungo Province was divided into six districts as Kunisaki County, and during the Nara period, Usamiya's fief land was placed in three of these districts, and the remaining areas, except for Kunisaki District, became the territory of Urabe Jyugosho, the Mirokuji temple of Usamiya. After Usamiya was purged in the Dokyo Incident, Mirokuji monks began mountain asceticism on the Kunisaki Peninsula, and sacred sites were opened in various places.

　《豊後国風土記》などによれば古来瀬戸内交通の目標とされ，〈垂仁紀〉には意富伽羅（おほから）国の美女が国前（くにさき）の比売許曾（ひめこそ）神になる話がある。令制により豊後国国埼郡として6郷に区分され，奈良時代にはその3郷に宇佐宮の封戸位田がおかれ，残りのうち国前郷以外は〈浦部十五荘〉として宇佐宮弥勒寺領になる。宇佐宮が道鏡事件で粛清された後，弥勒寺僧が国東半島で山岳修行を始め，各地に霊場が開かれた。…
