…Organum is a general term for the compositional technique of adding a different melody to a Gregorian chant melody. The first form of this technique, which began in the mid-9th century, was still crude. However, during the period of the Notre Dame school in Paris from the end of the 12th century to the 13th century, a technique was used in which an expanded portion of a Gregorian chant melody was used as a plain melody and an ornamental melody was layered on top of it. This technique was called clausula (Latin).
