Carnivora, Civetidae. Also known simply as the mongoose. A weasel-like animal with a body length of about 45 cm, it has a long tail that is almost the same length as its body. Its tail is bushy and tapers at the end, becoming thicker at the base. It is known for preying on snakes, and has been introduced to various places to control poisonous snakes, but there have been cases where it has had a negative impact on other biota. It was introduced to Okinawa Island and Tonaki Island in 1910 to control the viper snake. It is stronger against poisonous snakes than other animals, but a bite will kill it. It is agile and when attacking a snake, it quickly bites the head. It is found in India, Iran, Sri Lanka, etc., and lives near human settlements and cultivated land.

食肉目ジャコウネコ科。単にマングースとも呼ばれる。体長 45cm内外のイタチに似た動物で，尾も長く，体とほぼ等長。尾はふさふさしていて先が細く，基部のほうが太い。ヘビ類を捕食することで有名で，毒ヘビ防除のため各地に移入されているが，他の生物相に悪い影響を及ぼした例もある。沖縄本島，渡名喜島にもハブ退治のため 1910年に移入された。毒ヘビに対して他の動物より強いが，咬まれれば死んでしまう。動作は敏捷で，ヘビを攻撃するときはすばやく頭に咬みつく。インド，イラン，スリランカなどに分布し，人家付近，耕作地などに生息する。
