…Charity, or a somewhat organized form of charity, is a good deed based on religious and emotional motives, and involves relief for the poor and medical treatment for the sick. Charity has been regarded as one of the important practical virtues in Judaism, Christianity, and Buddhism. However, with the establishment of modern civil society, its religious background faded, and after the Industrial Revolution, it became even more secularized. In a period when public relief measures were immature, charity played an important role as part of voluntary relief efforts by private citizens, along with mutual aid organizations such as fraternal societies.
