...The lyrics are seven verses in total, including one for children. It was originally composed on the night of April 26, 1792 as a marching song for the Northern Rhine Corps, and was first sung at the house of the mayor of Strasbourg, where it was published under the title "Chant de guerre pour l'armée du Rhin". During the Second Empire (1852-70), in an attempt to dilute the revolutionary color, the song "Partons pour la Syrie", which is said to have been composed with the help of Napoleon III's mother Eugène Hortense, was temporarily appointed as the national anthem, but when Napoleon III fell from power, "La Marseillaise" was restored and has remained so to this day. ...
