The capital of Tacna province in the southern tip of Peru. It is located in the desert at the foot of the Andes, about 230 km southeast of Arequipa, overlooking the Caprina River. It is about 550 m above sea level. In the 16th century, the Spanish built the city on land that had long been inhabited by the Aymara Indians. It prospered during the colonial period due to its fertile soil and cool climate, and its proximity to the Pacific coast port of Arica in Chile. Silver from the Potosi silver mine in Bolivia was also transported to Arica through the city. As a result of Peru's participation in the Pacific War that began between Chile and Bolivia over saltpeter interests, the city was occupied by the Chilean army from 1880 to 1929, but the city was modernized during that time. It is currently the center of the surrounding agricultural region, distributing tobacco, grapes, cotton, sugar cane, etc., and producing tanned leather, canned fruit, wine, etc. The Pan-American Highway runs through it, and it is about 40 km from the border with Chile. Connected to the port of Arica by rail. Population 150,200 (1990 estimate). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
