In the pre-Islamic Arabian Peninsula, known as Jahiliyya, nomadic Bedouins were the predominant inhabitants, except for some settled areas such as Mecca and Medina. They moved between small family groups to a certain watering place and raised livestock such as camels, goats, and sheep. In times of war or famine, they organized larger blood-related groups to deal with emergencies.
