Japanese: ロッパ族(珞巴族) - ロッパぞく（英語表記）Luò bā zú

An ethnic minority living in the border area between the Tibet Autonomous Region of China and India. The population is approximately 2,300 (1990). "Loppa" is the Tibetan name for them, meaning "southern people", and they refer to themselves differently depending on where they live, such as "Bogaer" or "Niebun". Their language belongs to the Tibeto-Burman family, and a small number of them can speak and read Tibetan. They do not have a written language, but it is said that in the past they communicated by carving wood and tying ropes. They were officially recognized as a single ethnic group in 1965.
