A marine animal belonging to the order Acanthariidae of the class Crustacea and the order Complete Thorax of the phylum Arthropoda. It grows in colonies on rocks near the high tide line of reefs facing the open ocean, or on the tops of large rocks in the mid- and low-tide zones. It is a barnacle with a shell diameter of less than 8 mm, and can withstand long periods of exposure. When there are few individuals, it is conical in shape with clear longitudinal ribs, but when it is dense, it becomes closer to cylindrical. It is distributed from southwestern Hokkaido to Tanegashima in Kagoshima Prefecture, but in places with rough waves, the closely related and slightly larger species Ch. pilsbryi can also be found. Ch. malayensis , the southern rock barnacle, is also found south of the Tokara Islands. [Masamichi Takeda] The shell diameter is 8mm or less and is conical, but when they are crowded together they become closer to a cylinder. They can withstand long periods of exposure. © Underwater Fort Enterprise, Isamu Soyama "> Rock Barnacle (Ecology) A small rock barnacle is attached to the shell of a large black barnacle. © Underwater Fort Enterprise, Isamu Soyama "> Black Barnacles and Rock Barnacles (Ecology) Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
