Thermite process - Thermite method

A refining method that utilizes the thermite reaction. When a metal powder that oxidizes easily and a metal oxide powder that reduces easily are mixed and ignited, the metal powder burns, taking oxygen from the oxide, and the oxide is reduced to molten metal. This mixture of metal and oxide is called a thermite, and the reaction is called the thermite reaction. Aluminum is often used as the metal powder, but silicon or ferrosilicon can also be used. It is used as a refining method to obtain metals from the oxides of chromium, cobalt, manganese, and vanadium, but the purity of the metal obtained is not very good. Iron is also welded using the thermite reaction between aluminum powder and iron oxide powder. This is called thermite welding, and is used when laying long railroad tracks, etc.

テルミット反応を利用した精錬法．酸化しやすい金属粉末と，還元しやすい金属酸化物粉末とを混合して着火すると，金属粉末は酸化物の酸素を奪って燃焼し，酸化物は還元されて溶融金属になる．この金属と酸化物との混合剤をテルミットといい，反応をテルミット反応という．金属粉末としてアルミニウムを使用することが多いが，ケイ素またはフェロシリコンを使用することもある．クロム，コバルト，マンガン，バナジウムの酸化物から金属を得るときの一精錬方法として使用されるが，得られる金属の純度はあまりよくない．また，アルミニウム粉末と酸化鉄粉末のテルミット反応を利用して鉄を溶接する．これをテルミット溶接といい，鉄道のロングレール敷設の際などに使用される．
