Ueshi Castle

Japanese:
Ueshi Castle
This mountain castle was located in Yurihama-cho, Tohaku-gun, Tottori Prefecture. It was the residence of the Nanjo clan from the Muromachi period to the Azuchi- Momoyama period. It is said to have been built in 1366 (Seiji 5) by Nanjo Sadamune on the summit of Mount Hagoromoishi, over 370m above sea level, south of Lake Itogo. After Sadamune, the castle was the residence of successive generations of clans, but during the time of the 8th lord, Munemoto , it was attacked by Amago Tsunehisa and the castle was taken over. When the Amago clan was annihilated by the Mori clan, Munemoto returned to Hagoromoishi Castle. During the time of the 9th lord, Mototsugu, fierce battles with the Mori clan were fought at Hagoromoishi Castle. Later, the 10th lord, Mototada , sided with the Western forces in the Battle of Sekigahara, and was stripped of his title, leading to the castle being abandoned. Currently, the remains of the enclosure, earthworks , stone walls , moats, and wells have been maintained, and a three-storey castle tower has been reproduced on the summit. Excavations have also uncovered the remains of a wooden gate, ceramics, and ammunition. Take the Matsuzaki Line bus bound for Kurayoshi from Matsuzaki Station on the JR San'in Main Line, get off at Nagowada , and take a taxi for about 20 minutes.
