No direct evidence has been excavated of mathematics from the Indus Valley civilization, but the high level of planning seen in its urban architecture indicates a certain degree of development in surveying techniques. Mathematical knowledge from the Vedic period can be known, albeit incompletely, through the Śulbasūtra. This is a set of guidelines compiling rules for constructing the ritual sites required for the Vedic Śrauta rituals. The earliest of these manuals are dated to the 6th century BCE and the latest to the 2nd century CE, but because each individual rule is essential for the realization of the rituals, it is thought that most of the mathematical knowledge found therein is as old as the history of the Śrauta rituals themselves.

インダス文明期の数学については何一つ直接的資料が発掘されていないが，その都市建築に見られる高度の計画性は，ある程度の測量技術の発達を物語る。　ベーダ期の数学知識は，《シュルバ･スートラŚulbasūtra》を通じて不完全ながら知ることができる。これはベーダのシュラウタ祭式に必要な祭場を設営するための規則を集めた一群の綱要書であり，その編纂年代は古いもので前6世紀，新しいもので後2世紀とされるが，個々の規則は祭式の実現に欠かせないものであるから，そこに見られる数学知識も大半はシュラウタ祭式の歴史と同じ古さを持つと考えられる。
