…Construction began in 1377 as a Hallenkirche, but in 1392 it was converted by Ulrich von Ensingen into a three-aisled basilica with a west tower (later becoming a five-aisled basilica). The great spire on the west front was started by Matthias Böblinger at the end of the 15th century, and after a three-century hiatus from the mid-16th century, it was finally completed in 1890. The great spire is 161m high, the highest in the world. …
