Metallogenic epoch

Japanese: 鉱床生成期 - こうしょうせいせいき（英語表記）metallogenic epoch

A metallogenic period is a period when deposits of the same origin were formed in a certain area. Since deposits are formed by igneous and sedimentary processes, metallogenic periods correspond to the time when such processes occurred. Although the time and duration vary depending on the type of deposit, various metallogenic periods are known around the world during the geological period from the Precambrian to the present. For example, most of the banded iron formations found in continental regions around the world were formed over a period of 200 to 300 million years around 2 billion years ago, and it is believed that a huge amount of iron ore precipitated from seawater during this period due to major changes in the composition of the ocean and atmosphere.

ある地域に同一の成因をもつ鉱床が集中的に生成した時期をいう。鉱床は火成作用や堆積作用などにより生成されるものであるから，鉱床生成期はそのような作用が起こった時期に対応している。時期，期間ともに鉱床のタイプによりさまざまであるが，先カンブリア時代から現在までの地質時代に世界各地でいろいろな鉱床生成期が知られている。例えば，全世界の大陸地域にみられる縞状鉄鉱層の大部分は約20億年前ころの2億～3億年間に生成したもので，この時期に海洋や大気の組成に大きな変化が生じたために莫大な量の鉄鉱が海水から沈殿したものと考えられている。
