Sethi I

The second king of the 19th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt. Reigned from 1304 to 1290 BC. Son of Ramses I, the founder of the dynasty. Aiming for a full-scale reconstruction of the aftermath of the Amarna Revolution, he resumed his Asian expeditions immediately after ascending to the throne, and was largely successful in recovering Palestine and southern Syria. Within Egypt, he also restored the names of gods, including Amun, which had been deleted during the Amarna period, and promoted large-scale construction and reconstruction of the Great Hypostyle Hall of Karnak Temple and the Temple of Osiris at Abydos. The royal tomb (Tomb 17) in the Valley of the Kings is the largest of all the royal tombs, and contains almost all of the funerary documents from the New Kingdom period. It is considered to be a representative royal tomb of the Valley of the Kings, with wall decorations that are well preserved and elegantly carved with artistic beauty.

古代エジプト第19王朝2代目の王。在位，前1304ころ‐前1290年ころ。王朝の始祖ラメセス1世の子。〈アマルナ革命〉の後遺症からの本格的な再建を目ざし，即位後直ちにアジア遠征を再開し，パレスティナ，南シリアの回復にほぼ成功した。国内でもアマルナ時代に削除されたアメンをはじめとする神名の復原，カルナック神殿大列柱室やアビドスのオシリス神殿などの建造や再建を大規模に推進した。〈王家の谷〉の王墓(第17号墓)は王墓中最大規模を誇り，新王国時代の葬礼文書をほとんど網羅し，芸術性に富む優美な浮彫をよく保存する壁面装飾とともに〈王家の谷〉を代表する王墓とされる。
