...The Berbers were incorporated into Islam around the 8th century, but in the mountains they continue to pass down ancient rituals and festivals, and women's singing plays a central role in these. The male Berber minstrels (Imdiazens), who are numerous in Marrakech and elsewhere, also focus on singing, including epic poems. Berber music is centered on singing, and uses string instruments such as the ghembri, amzad, and bendir.
