A school of calligraphy that studies calligraphy from calligraphy scrolls modeled on the calligraphy of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi (the so-called Two Wangs) of the Jin Dynasty in China. It is the opposite of stone learning. Kang Youwei of the Qing Dynasty called studying stone rubbings and copying calligraphy scrolls "book learning." The Two Wangs perfected the art of regular script, running script, and cursive script into elegant and refined art, and their calligraphy was very popular in aristocratic society from the Six Dynasties to the Tang Dynasty. When Emperor Taizong of the Song Dynasty had the "Chunhua Ge Edited Works" compiled and revered the calligraphy of the Two Wangs, book learning became the epitome of calligraphy, and book learning flourished during the Yuan Dynasty as well.
