Funawatashi Groom - Funawatashi Groom

Japanese:
Funawatashi Groom - Funawatashi Groom

The title of a Kyogen piece. It is also written as "Funato-gumi." The groom, who is about to visit his father-in-law for the first time after marriage and exchange sake, approaches the river and boards a ferry boat. The boatman asks the groom for some sake as a gift for his father-in-law, and the groom cannot refuse, so he drinks it himself and empties the sake barrel. When he arrives at his father-in-law's house, the sake is used in a sake ceremony, and the barrel is revealed to be empty, causing him to lose face. This is the Okura school, but in the Izumi school, the boatman and the father-in-law are the same person. The boatman who forced the groom to drink sake on the boat returns home and panics when he finds out that it is his own son-in-law. So he shaves off his big beard, changes his appearance, and attends the drinking ceremony hiding his face, but is eventually found out and embarrassed. This is a work that depicts the psychology of drinkers who lose their sense of moderation once they start drinking, and the humor of the mistakes that result from this. The performances on board the ship are a highlight.
