The political unification of Gaul and Rome is illustrated by the political struggle between Emperor Nero and his rival Emperor Galba, which was reflected in the rebellion of Vindex at Lugdunum, who sought a free Gaul, and conversely, the conflict between the northeastern part of Gaul, controlled by the Rhenish legions, and the southwestern part, controlled by the senatorial nobility, which was directly linked to Roman political struggle. However, the Provincial Council of Durocortorum (Reims) in 70 AD, which was the result of fear of Germanic invasion, resolved the conflict between the Gaul's regions, and reconciled the military and the nobility under Emperor Trajan.
