Agechi

The confiscation of part or all of the land of a feudal lord or a hatamoto. The confiscated land is called agarichi. In particular, when the shogunate government made the land confiscation necessary for its policy, it gave the land to the feudal lord in proportion to the amount of the confiscation. Examples include the confiscated Nishinomiya from the Amagasaki domain in 1769 (Meiwa 6) and the confiscation of part of Ezo from the Matsumae domain in both the Kansei and Ansei eras. The most famous example is the confiscation carried out during the Tenpo Reforms, which targeted private land in Edo and Osaka, and Niigata, which was part of the Nagaoka domain, but was only carried out in Niigata. Note that after the Meiji Restoration, until the abolition of the domains and the establishment of prefectures, it was usually written as kamichi.

大名・旗本などの領地を一部または全部取り上げること。取り上げられた領地を上(あが)り知(ち)という。とくに幕府の政策上の必要から上知せしめた場合には、それに見合うだけの封地を与えている。1769年（明和6）に西宮(にしのみや)を尼崎(あまがさき)藩から取り上げて幕領に編入した例や、松前藩から寛政(かんせい)、安政(あんせい)の両度にわたり蝦夷(えぞ)地の一部を上知させた例があげられる。とくに有名なものは天保(てんぽう)の改革中に行われた上知で、江戸、大坂最寄地(もよりち)の私領と長岡藩領の新潟が対象となったが、新潟のみに実施された。なお、明治維新後、廃藩置県までの間は上地と書くのが普通である。
