A Jodo sect monk in the early Meiji period. Born on March 15, 1818 in Chikugo (Fukuoka Prefecture). He was known by the names Shoo, Kokei, Kokyodo, and Kiyudojin. At the age of six, he shaved his head under Zenryu at Saiganji Temple in Kurume, and traveled to Kyoto to study both Confucianism and Buddhism. During the late Edo period and the Meiji Restoration, he joined the League of Various Religious Sovereigns, wrote "Buppo Fuka Shakuron" to refute the anti-Buddhist theory, and wrote "Byakuja Kankenroku" and "Shoyaron" to work toward the rejection of Christianity. He also served at Joukoku-ji Temple in Iwatsuki, Musashi Province (Saitama Prefecture) and Denzu-in Temple in Koishikawa, Tokyo, before becoming the 75th chief priest of Chion-in Temple, founding the Western Main School of Buddhist Studies, and becoming the head priest of the Jodo sect in March 1885 (Meiji 18). He was also skilled in calligraphy, painting, poetry, and prose, and was well-known as a Buddhist historical scholar and connoisseur. He passed away on March 15, 1891.
