...Authentication naturally involves the question of authenticity, but the work of appraisal also includes determining whether a work is a copy made by a disciple or assistant, whether it is a work made in a workshop, and which parts were contributed by multiple artists, as well as discovering restorations or repairs made by other people or later generations. The ultimate goal of appraisal is to determine the artist, or what is known as attribution, but the results can also have a significant impact on the market (commercial) value of the work, and in this respect appraisal is different in nature from purely academic research into the artist or date of production of a work.

The history of appraisal, including the issue of authenticity, dates back to the Renaissance in the West, but appraisal in the modern sense only began in the second half of the 19th century, when art museums were established, the organization, research, and cataloging of their collections became popular, and research into art history itself saw a dramatic development.
