Mehmet Ākif

1873‐1936
Turkish poet. Author of the lyrics for the Turkish Republic's national anthem, "March of Independence." After the Young Turk Revolution of 1908, he published many poems as editor-in-chief of the magazine "True Path," which he founded himself, and played an active role as a leader of Islamism. After World War I, he participated in Kemal Ataturk's liberation movement and became a member of parliament, during which time he wrote the lyrics for "March of Independence." In 1925, he traveled to Egypt and taught Turkish literature at Cairo University, returning to Japan in 1936. [Arai Masami]

トルコの詩人。トルコ共和国国歌《独立行進曲》の作詞者。1908年の青年トルコ革命以後，自ら創刊した《真正な道》誌の主筆として多くの詩を発表，イスラム主義の旗頭として活躍した。第1次大戦後は，ケマル･アタチュルクの解放運動に参加し，国会議員にもなり，このとき《独立行進曲》を作詞した。1925年にエジプトに渡り，カイロ大学でトルコ文学を教え，36年に帰国した。【新井政美】
