Kisaburo Yokota

International law scholar. Born August 6, 1896 in Konan City, Aichi Prefecture. Graduated from the Faculty of Law at Tokyo Imperial University in 1922 (Taisho 11), he became an assistant professor at the same university in 1921 and a professor in 1930 (Showa 5). In January 1930, he accompanied the Japanese delegation to the London Disarmament Conference. During the period of militarism after the Manchurian Incident, he maintained a critical stance based on international pacifism. He explained the basic theory of international law using the methodology of the Vienna School, and was a great mentor to the next generation of international law scholars, making him a leading figure in the field of international law in Japan. After retiring from the University of Tokyo, he held the important position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (third term) from 1960 to 1966 (Showa 35 to 41). He is a prolific author, with his main works including "The Essence of International Trials" and "International Law Studies, Vol. 1," as well as "International Law," "Basic Theory of International Law," "Right of Self-Defense," and "International Law of Diplomatic Relations." In 1981, he was awarded the Order of Culture.
