The starfish Asterias amurensis , also known as the red starfish, is distributed from Hokkaido to the Seto Inland Sea, where it lives on sandy and muddy bottoms from the coast to a depth of about 100m. The body color varies from pale yellow to pale purple depending on the individual, and in Tokyo Bay there are ones that are almost entirely yellow, which are also called yellow starfish.
