An industrial city and the capital of Podkarpaty Voivodeship in southeastern Poland. Population 162,200 (2001). Located 150 km east of Krakow, at the foot of the Former Carpathian Mountains, it has a long history dating back to the mid-14th century. Economically it is a backward region, but since the Second World War it has been producing oil and natural gas, and it is located on an industrial artery connecting southern Ukraine with the Upper Silesian industrial region, so it has been industrializing rapidly. It produces railroad cars, electric motors, aircraft engines, textiles, cement, and furniture.
