A general term for a group of high-energy particles that are almost constantly trapped in the Earth's magnetic field, existing in a region extending from an altitude of about 1,000 km to a geocentric distance of about 10R E (R E is the Earth's radius) (Figure). Their existence was revealed by a group led by James Alfred Van Allen through observations from early artificial satellites such as Explorer 1, Explorer 2, Explorer 3, and Pioneer 4, the first American artificial satellites launched in 1958, so they are also called the Van Allen belts.
